YMCA of Southwestern Ontario was founded in 1856 and has over 200 locations from Goderich to Point Pelee, and Windsor to Woodstock. We are one of the largest not-for-profit providers of licensed child care in Canada and have over 100 school age programs across our regions. We also offer settlement services to newcomers, employment programs, mental health support, and youth programs. YMCA of Southwestern Ontario operates two overnight camps, one in Point Pelee National Park, and one on Beausoleil Island in Muskoka. We also have 15 Health & Fitness branches across Southwestern Ontario.

Employees and volunteers of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario are ambassadors for the Y both on and off the job. Position: Full Time Assistant Camp Director and Outdoor Centre Manager
Location: May-September, live-in at YMCA Camp Queen Elizabeth, Beausoleil Island
October- April, London Ontario with a hybrid work model option
Start Date: January 6, 2025
Salary: $45,000-$48,000

In this role, you will:
• Camper and Staff Support: Create a positive culture, meet camper needs, form positive relationships, supervise and manage risks, implement child development principles, and complete paperwork on time.
• Program Support: Promote camp registration year-round, prepare and improve camp programs, adhere to policies and standards, oversee program quality and safety, and complete administrative tasks on time.
• Customer Service: Communicate positively and promptly, maintain professionalism, coordinate information sharing, and track feedback.
• Boat Driving: Maintain certifications, operate commercial vessels safely, report deficiencies, and maintain logs.
• Living and Working in an Overnight Camp Environment: Maintain a positive attitude, model YMCA values, and foster a healthy lifestyle.
• Relationship Building and Relationships: Collaborate with area managers, act as an ambassador for YMCA and Camp Queen Elizabeth, maintain confidentiality, and celebrate diversity. Maintain strong relationships with campers, families, staff, and partners.
• Outdoor Centre: Plan and implement group programs, establish budgets and strategies, promote and secure bookings, ensure program quality and safety, design curriculum and support materials, and explore new outdoor education opportunities.
• Supervisory / Managerial / Coordination: Assist in hiring and training camp staff, model leadership, manage camp operations, act as designate when the Camp Director is away, delegate responsibilities, provide staff support, recognize staff achievements, adhere to HR policies, and assist with scheduling.
• Financial / Budgeting: Manage budgets for programs and supplies, plan and budget for seasonal groups, and understand financial implications of mismanagement.
• Working Conditions: Live and work onsite during camp seasons, engage with staff and campers indoors and outdoors, support ill or injured campers, and work in an office and hybrid environment from October to April.
• Problem Solving, Decision Making, and Judgement: Enforce rules and policies, make safety decisions independently, implement program changes, handle sensitive matters, and lead staff and volunteers.
• Creativity and Innovation: Develop and adapt ideas to achieve camp goals, encourage creativity among staff, create and implement programs and activities, and manage and develop volunteers.
Education & Skills Qualifications:
• Standard First Aid and CPR C
• Current NL certification
• G license
• Camp Marine Module Training or Small Vessel Operator Proficiency and MED A3 certification
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel)
• Minimum 3 years of management experience in a camp or outdoor recreation setting
• Skills in Healthy Child/Adolescent Development, supervising, and coaching staff
• Experience in outdoor education (an asset)
