Position Summary:
An Operator works under the daily supervision of either the Manager of Parks and Facilities or Manager of Transportation and carries out the mandate of the department through a variety of duties by effectively and safely maintaining roads and other facilities for the benefit of the public. This position will report seasonally to Public Works and Community Services.
Primary Duties:
The major duties of the position are outlined below.
Road Maintenance
- Carries out a variety of maintenance duties including:
- Loose top maintenance and cold mix/hot mix repairs, patching
- Roadside maintenance (sweeping, shoulder re-gravelling and dragging, washout repairs, grass trimming, weed control, etc.).
- Tree removal and planting
- Maintain culverts, ditches, retaining walls, fences and guard
- Bridge maintenance (replacing railings, painting).
- Maintain sidewalks and parking
- Drives and operates all equipment such as trucks, sander, plow, tractors/mowers, grader, street sweeper, grinder, wood chipper and
- Maintains safety devices on roads including sign installation and maintenance, guide post repair, etc.
- Winter control includes plowing, spreading sand/salt, snow removal, snow fence erection and removal, winter damage repair, etc.
- Carries out construction work under the guidance of the Area Manager, such as installation of sidewalks including forming, pouring and cement
- Carries out maintenance duties for facilities, equipment and supplies, including:
- Repair of large and small equipment (mechanical, welding, fabricating, painting, cleaning).
- Painting and other routine building repairs (carpentry and plumbing).
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
Parks/Facilities Operations:
- Works under the supervision of the Manager to ensure that facilities are ready for scheduled bookings and uses.
- Performs general janitorial duties, keeping all areas of facilities clean and in good repair.
- Carries out maintenance work at municipal properties including: tree trimming, grass cutting, periodic planting/maintaining flower beds and landscaping; repair and maintain fences, structures, signs, playing fields, play equipment and other facilities.
- Keeps all parks and other outdoor recreational facilities in clean and safe condition for the use of the public.
Other
- Carries out special waste pickups such as Spring Clean Up or beach cleaning.
- Carries out work related to water and sewer services and municipal drains as assigned by the Manager from time to time.
- Carried out other related duties as assigned by Manager from time to time.
Qualifications:
- Secondary school graduation and complimenting post-secondary education preferred.
- Excellent communication skills for regular interaction with members of the public, municipal and other governmental staff.
- DZ Driver’s Licence.
- Safety training: Health & Safety, WHMIS, and First Aid preferred.
- Horticultural training or certification.
- Refrigeration and ice plant certifications: Certified Ice Technician is an asset.
- Chainsaw Safety Course
- Working towards or possession of Certification from recognized Roads School (Mahoney).
- Certificates or Training in: Smart Serve, Use of Fire Extinguishers, Handling Combustible & Toxic Gases, Working in Confined Spaces, Chainsaw Operator.
- Construction experience and/or municipal road infrastructure maintenance
