Job Description

Scope of Position:

To assist with the implementation and documentation of resource conservation management on private and public lands and the delivery of forestry extension services.

Position Description:

  • Assist with implementation of forest conservation management on private and public lands, including data collection, forest stand assessment, documentation, and mapping.
  • Contract supervision including overseeing County sponsored tree planting initiatives involving the acceptance of planting stock, contractor compliance monitoring, and final acceptance of planted trees.
  • Co-ordinate and implement a young tree maintenance program to include watering, mulching and pruning of newly planted trees on County lands.
  • Assisting with the maintenance of GIS services for Operations.
  • Assist with data collection related to enforcement of the Forest Conservation By-law.
  • Follows, under direct supervision, generally accepted administrative/enforcement policy and practice, application of prescribed forest mensuration, silviculture and management practices.
  • To assist with the delivery of forestry extension services to various client groups including the Norfolk Woodlot Owners Association
  • Operate and maintain forestry equipment, trucks, and a variety of power and hand tools.
  • Works closely with, and in full view of the public.
  • Adheres to proper protocols for documenting, recording and compiling data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in related field such as forestry, urban forestry, arboriculture, or other environmental science study.
  • Minimum of one year up to and including two years current related experience working in the field of forestry, arboriculture, urban forestry or environmental consulting, or combined education and experience equivalent.
  • Knowledge of silvicultural practices in the management of hardwood forests and red pine plantations in southern Ontario an asset.
  • Practical experience and proven ability to collect information using a GPS unit.
  • Applied GIS experience (asset)
  • Member of the International Society of Arboriculture (asset)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the use of equipment and tools related to forestry and urban forestry.
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Good physical dexterity.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and to deal with the public.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license, minimum G2, and experience operating trucks and pulling trailers.
  • Understanding of the practices relating to the field of natural resource management and application of acceptable professional practices.
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software.
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
