Summary of Duties:
Reporting to a Manager within the Forestry division, the incumbent contributes to the City’s Corporate Asset Management and Urban Forestry Strategy to enhance, monitor and evaluate tree canopy cover and city-owned woodlands. A significant amount of outdoor field work will be undertaken.
Work Performed:
- Reviews planting locations and provides support to the Forestry Operations work group
- Assists the Forestry Inspector and Urban Forestry Planner in the development, implementation and monitoring of related departmental strategies, policies, procedures and programs.
- Assist the Forestry Inspector and Urban Forestry Planner with data management, surveys and sample plots, monitoring forest pest populations and tree diseases; monitor pest control operations to evaluate overall effectiveness; safely collect insect and disease samples from field sites for further examination.
- Ability to distinguish native and invasive insects and identify tree diseases as well as abiotic factors affecting the health, structure and public safety of the urban forest. Compiles information into reports.
- Supports the City of London’s tree planting program by identifying suitable future planting locations within the municipality. Inputs and tracks inventory data related to future tree planting.
- Capable of working alone and in all conditions, except extreme weather events, and can safely drive a pick-up truck.
- Completes field work across the City of London to evaluate current woodland condition and evaluate Levels of Service for city woodlands in accordance with an established asset management framework.
- Demonstrates competency in risk management and personal safety by adhering to corporate requirements for wearing of PPE, and managing potential hazards on site including ticks, wildlife and people.

- Attends and contributes to meetings with Corporate Asset Management and Urban Forestry, virtually or in person.
- Creates worksheets, reports, maps and diagrams using Excel, GIS and various computerized applications.
- Assist the Forestry Inspector or Urban Forestry Planner in organizing and participating in special projects and events as required.
- Undertakes additional training as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled in Environmental Geosciences, Environmental Anthropology, Environmental Management, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Resource & Environmental Economics, Forestry, Arboriculture or a closely related program.
Must be a current student enrolled in full-time studies returning to school full-time September 2025 and/or require this placement to graduate from an academic program.
Experience:
Previous work experience in urban forestry, asset management or within a municipality is an asset.
Specialized Training & Licenses:
A valid Ontario “G” class driver’s licence.
CPR/First Aid Training is an asset.
Compensation & Other Information:
$22.44/hour.
This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 4 month student position (May - September 2025).
Current hours of Work & Work Arrangement: Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m with hybrid work arrangement OR Monday – Friday 7:00am to 3:00pm with no hybrid working arrangement. Flexible working arrangements available. Some weekend working is expected.
