Summary of Duties:

Reports to and carries out work under the direction of a Manager in Planning and Development.  Undertakes and assists staff in a variety of planning, environmental, sustainability, resiliency and natural heritage-related assignments and studies, including research, survey, data-gathering, data maintenance, and data analysis. Provides graphic design assistance in the preparation of reports and studies.  Makes presentations, where necessary, to various groups including Advisory Committees, Standing Committees, Stakeholder Meetings, and the General Public.

Work Performed:

  • Under the direction of a Manager in Planning and Development, undertakes research, survey, data-gathering, data monitoring, data analysis, and mapping analysis related to Planning and Development projects and processes.  Provides information to other planning staff, municipal departments, agencies, elected officials, community organizations and the general public.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, while applying planning, sustainability, resiliency and natural heritage-related principles; and provides information to senior staff, Managers, and the Managing Director, Planning and Development pertaining to Planning assignments.
  • Develops graphics, maps and other visualization materials to assist Planning and Development staff in their projects.  Undertakes site photography; and analyzes graphic illustrations, photography, modelling and mapping.
  • Conducts, or assists in the preparation of studies, strategies, guidelines and projects relating to the long term planning for sustainable development of land, facilities and services, including the study of demographic, socio-economic, physical and environmental factors; solicits input from other departments, divisions, agencies and the public.
  • Coordinates implementation of capital projects for the protection of publically owned Environmentally Significant Areas (ESAs), facilitates Trails Advisory Group on-site meetings in ESAs, and facilitates the Adopt an ESA program and ESA stewardship activities;
  • Supplies general ecological and natural heritage information to the general public, other municipal departments and agencies, and others.
  • Assists in the organization and participates in presentation/public meeting set-up, and attends meetings of the Planning and Environment Committee, other Standing Committees, Advisory Committees, and citizen groups, as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Technology Program within an environmental science, environmental planning, or planning-related, University or College program.

Must be a current student enrolled in full-time studies returning to school full-time September 2025 and/or require this placement to graduate from an academic program.

Specialized Training & Licenses:

  • Working understanding of planning legislation, and planning, natural heritage, sustainability and resiliency principles and practices.
  • Working knowledge of Planning Act.
  • Valid Driver’s License is an asset.
  • Strong computer skills in Windows Office programs, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge in graphic design related software, such as Google SketchUp, AutoCAD, Adobe Create Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and ArcGIS.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Compensation & Other Information:

$22.44/hour.

This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 4 month student position (May - September 2025).

Current hours of Work: Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Work Arrangement: In office.
