Instructor Guard/Supervising Instructor Guard (PPT) (2) (CUPE 7.25)

Scope of Position:

Schedule will include Supervising Instructor Guard shifts as well as Instructor Guard shifts as required for relief.

Position Description:

Instructor Guard and Supervising Instructor Guard:

  • To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County swimming pools and to teach swimming programs and promote good relations with users of the facilities.
  • Responsible for safety supervision, class management, and risk management during the instructional classes.
  • Works according to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and corporate policies and procedures
  • Provide instruction to individuals and groups in organized instructional classes
  • Prepare lesson plans, organize equipment, teach and evaluate swim classes in accordance with the standards established by the Lifesaving Society and Norfolk County. Classes may also include advanced leadership courses, aquafitness and mobility programs
  • Complete all documentation related to class instruction such as but not limited to attendance, worksheets, and completing report cards.
  • Perform lifeguard duties during recreational swims, rental groups, and other aquatics programs.  Ensure compliance with Regulation 565 and Norfolk County policies and procedures including performing rescues and first aid when required.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and react in an emergency situation which may involve first aid or a building emergency.
  • Assist with special pool programs and special County aquatic events/water safety initiatives that are held at the pool or at other locations
  • Attend and participate in aquatic division meetings and in-house training sessions that are organized by the Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Participate in team building with all staff.
  • Complete any necessary reports and documentation associated with pool operation to include but not limited to: shift reports in the pool log book, incident reports, pool fouling reports, water readings, etc.
  • Provide professional and courteous customer service at all times, including greeting customers, answering phone calls, assisting customers with inquiries and online registration/booking system, accepting payments – including cash transactions during the shift (i.e., taking registrations, issuing passes and pass cards, and issuing receipts (note – some items apply to the operations at Delhi Kinsmen Pool only)
  • Help to maintain the pool facility by performing regulated water tests, equipment checks, cleaning and sanitization duties in accordance with Ministry of Health and Norfolk County policies.  Reporting all problems to the Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics

Supervising Instructor Guard specifically:

  • To supervise and provide direction to student staff and ensure staff are following legislative requirements and County policies and procedures
  • Ability to direct staff and patrons in an emergency and ensure documentation is complete
  • Provide support for staff and act as a role model/mentor
  • Complete instructor and guarding evaluations as directed by Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Balance cash at the end of shift (applies to Delhi Kinsmen Pool only)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience: *all qualifications must be current

Instructor Guard and Supervising Instructor Guard:                                                    

  • Lifesaving Society Instructor
  • National Lifeguard Award
  • Standard First Aid with C.P.R. Level C, A.E.D.
  • Basic aquafit teaching experience of shallow and deep water classes is required.
  • Aquafitness Certification through CALA or Water ART or willing to obtain certification
  • High 5 – Principles of Healthy Child Development (an asset)

Supervising Instructor Guard specifically:

  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification
  • Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training (an asset)
  • One year experience as an Instructor Guard

Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of Recreation Management software, preferably XPLOR/Perfect Mind considered an asset
  • High degree of alertness and vigilance with attention to detail as it relates to the pool environment.
  • Excellent time management, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to deal with challenging customer service situations
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Strong organizational and instructional skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, excellent staff relations skills and ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to plan and manage special events
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment and have the basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Status: Permanent Part Time (up to 24 hours per week)

Salary:

Instructor Guard - $27.76 – $34.66 per hour

Supervising Instructor Guard - $30.53 – $38.15 per hour

Division: Community Development

Department: Recreation

Reports To: Supervisor, Aquatics

Location: Annaleise Carr Aquatics Centre and Delhi Kinsmen Pool. May be required to go to Waterford North Conservation Area and Backus Conservation Area if applicable programming is offered.

Note: We are a 7 day a week operation and shifts may include: early mornings, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.  Shifts will depend on facility and class/program schedules
