Summary of Duties:

Reports to the Manager, Waste Diversion Programs. The Waste Management Co-op Student will work closely with the Planning Coordinator(s) and with the Waste Management team on a range of day-to-day tasks and project related duties.  

 

The Waste Management Division is responsible for waste management planning, the day-to-day delivery of services and operation of facilities. In addition to assisting staff with their day-to-day duties and longer-term project work, the Waste Management Co-op Student will be assigned projects to be completed within their work term. 

Work Performed:

Research and Data Collection

  • Complete audits (eg. curbside collection, Green Bin carts at pilot project buildings, etc.) which may include visual inspections of what is set out, documenting contamination levels, observing collection and monitoring participation
  • Compile data from resident participation and feedback questionnaires
  • General data compilation and analysis
  • Waste management technology/program research

 

Operations

  • Assist with monitoring and operations at EnviroDepots
  • Assist with the organization, roll-out and management of the Green Bin Multi-Residential pilot project
  • Assist with landfill environmental monitoring
  • Conduct observation audits of how waste materials are set out at the curbside or at multi-residential buildings

 

Community Outreach and Engagement

  • Participate in outreach activities that promote increased awareness and compliance with London's waste diversion programs
  • Participate in engagement and outreach activities that promote increased awareness and compliance with the Green Bin pilot project program
  • Set up informational displays and participate at outreach events, engaging with residents and answering questions

General

  • Report regularly to Manager and/or Waste Management Coordinator(s) on work completed, including documentation, outcomes and recommendations
  • Respond to and investigate public enquiries and complaints by phone, in person or by email
  • Prepare and complete deliveries (printed materials, recycling bins and carts, Green Bins, kitchen containers etc.)
  • Assist with other day-to-day operations of waste programs and services, including waste material collection and transportation
  • Other Waste Management duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in or graduate student of Engineering, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Geography, Education, Media/Communications, Social Sciences.

Specialized Training & Licenses:

  • Ontario G Class License IS REQUIRED  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills   
  • Ability to engage members of the public in discussions
  • Ability to learn and convey information to others
  • Ability to communicate to individuals and small groups
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Initiative and organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team

Compensation & Other Information:

$22.44/hour.

This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 8 month student position (January - August 2025).

The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside the normal hours will occur throughout the eight-month term and will include work on weekends, in early morning, and in late afternoon to early evening. Work outside of the normal working hours will be as-needed and notice will be provided in advance, but should be expected.

Work Arrangement: More than 50% in the office. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
