Summary of Duties:

This position is to support the Recreation and Sport division in the promotion of current programs and the development of additional programming with the objective to increase participation of Diverse Populations in sport and recreational activities. This position will assist in the development of specific activities, events, clinics and opportunities for recreation and sport specifically focussed on equity-denied populations within the City of London – (examples: Newcomers, Indigenous persons, Women and children). 

Work Performed:

  • Program Development & Creation for Diverse Populations
    • Develop new sport and leisure programming for the City of London with a focus on creating opportunities to participate in recreation and sport activities for the following identified populations: Persons with disabilities; Residents with low income; Newcomers; LGBTQ2S & Gender equality; Indigenous Peoples.
    • Build capacity within the division to deliver programs such as (but not limited to):
        • Speciality Camps
        • Learn to Cricket
        • Learn to skate
    • Create specialty programs for diverse populations with an emphasis on promoting water safety such as a swim to survive camp/program.
    • Ensure high program standards and best practice for healthy child development & play.
  • Marketing and Promotion for Diverse Populations
    • Communicate with guardians, program participants, staff and external agencies where appropriate to maintain good working relationships.
    • Conduct surveys and outreach to populations with low participation in recreation and sport and supporting organizations with the goals of decreasing barriers, increasing relevancy of programming and increasing participation in Play Your Way.
    • Liaise with partners within the community for outreach and program development.
    • Provide support materials (handouts and packages) for presentations and events.
    • Work closely with the internal supports such as Anti-Racism and Anti-0ppression (ARAO) and Communications teams to develop marketing and promotional materials of clinics, events, workshops and registrations for diverse population such as: Person with Disabilities; Residents with low income; Newcomers; LGBTQ2S & Gender equality; Indigenous Peoples.

  • Recruitment Training Pertaining to Programs
    • Work with the ARAO division and other internal divisions to assist and support the training of staff in meeting the needs of diverse populations using best practices in methodology and techniques including: modification techniques, de-escalation techniques, communication assistance and cultural awareness.
    • Establish and maintain safe, healthy and respectful staff (aged 15 +) and program participants.
    • Provide resources to program staff pertaining to specific program participant: knowledge, cultural resources, specific accommodation, cultural safety.
    • Provide potential mentorships for Diverse staff to gain valuable knowledge of current programs
    • Creation of a recruitment strategy for newcomers as well as leading, supporting and implementing clinics promoting registration for Play Your Way activities.
  • Health and Safety
    • Handle workplace and community conflict in a mindful meaningful way and ensuring documentation is completed.
    • Stay up to date on anti-discrimination legislation.
    • Ensure suitable facility accommodations as per activity and safety needs.
    • Adheres to City Policies & Procedures and promotes Hight Five principles.
    • Demonstrates commitment to adherence to Health and Safety legislation and activity and promotes a culture of Safety.

  • Competencies:
    • Proven planning and organizational skills.
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with an empathetic nature.
    • Works efficiently in Microsoft work, Excel, Power point.
    • Experience in X-plor an asset
    • Experience with web platforms: Surveymonkey, Mentimeter, Eventbrite
    • Able to work independently and in a team environment.
    • Proven decision-making skills.
    • Proven leadership skills.
    • Experience in supporting diverse populations and equity-denied groups.
    • Second language an asset
       
  • Various hours, evening and weekends will be required.

Qualifications:

Eligibility under the City of London International Student Graduate Internship Program as follows (see below):

MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
 

  • Have been an international student that has graduated within the last year from a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Canada, and
  • Currently hold valid Post-Graduate Work Permit to be legally entitled to work in Canada, and
  • Have an English language benchmark of level 6 or above.
  • The following disciplines or related Degrees: Communications; Education; Behavioural Sciences; Sport and Recreation with a background in supporting diverse populations; Social Sciences; Equity, diversity & Inclusion; Sociology, Child & Youth Studies, Disability Studies
  • High five training as asset
  • Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check

Experience:

Experience working in a fast-paced environment

Experience in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI): working with diverse populations and equity denied groups

Experience in recreation and sport activities

Compensation & Other Information:

$22.44/hour

This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 20 weeks position.

Current hours of Work: 30 hour work week. 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m daily with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
