Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Neighbourhood Development and Support, the Bilingual Community Connector will help improve outreach and engagement efforts with communities historically underrepresented in the civic process and decisions that impact their community.

Role:

This casual position works as part of a team in the community and supports the development and implementation of the Neighbourhood Decision Making program and other projects across the City of London.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support City staff in designing and undertaking comprehensive and effective outreach and marketing, including in person and virtual engagement strategies.
  • Engage in two-way conversations with residents that will increase awareness of City projects and gather important feedback and concerns that will help inform and shape City initiatives.
  • Provide support with translation as required or appropriate.
  • Prepare presentations, speaking and briefing notes, and develop other related materials as requested.
  • Make presentations to residents and community groups.
  • Demonstrate commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression and human rights through practices and interactions with community partners, employees, and individuals and support programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment. 
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety. 
  • Attend evening and weekend functions/events, as required. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or higher education or equivalent combination of education and related professional and lived community experience.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Police Screening required prior to starting work
  • G2 or G Driver’s License
  • Access to a vehicle to transport equipment up to 20 pounds and travel to parks and facilities throughout London (mileage is reimbursed)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Written and oral fluency in English and one of the following languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai or Vietnamese. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to seek and form new relationships. 
  • Experience with community engagement and outreach
  • Knowledge of issues impacting equity seeking populations (including anti-oppression, anti-discrimination, decolonization, anti-racism, xenophobia, ableism, etc.)
  • Fosters an environment where people feel welcomed and included.
  • Preference for people who live in London and have existing community connections. 
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Proficient with social media platforms
  • Strong effective verbal and written, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills. 
  • Motivated self-starter and willing to take initiative.
  • Creative, confident, positive, and enthusiastic
  • A willingness to embrace inclusion, empowerment, and transparency.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision and make independent judgments based on a variety of situations.

Other Information:

  • This is a part-time, contract position for up to 20 hours per week.
  • Shift availability varies depending on community engagement opportunities. The number of shifts available in a week fluctuate from no shifts to up to 20 hours. Availability is requested one month in advance. 
  • In-person role with occasional virtual meetings
