Summary of Duties:

Reports to the Manager, Waste Diversion Programs. The student will work closely with the Planning Coordinator(s) and with the Waste Management team on a range of duties that will support the Green Festivals program and other Waste Management programs and services.


Waste Management works with Special Events to implement the Waste and Litter Management Plan for summer festivals held in Victoria Park. Green Festivals aims to encourage and enhance waste diversion through recycling and composting.

As needed:

  • Meet with Event Organizers, vendors and volunteer to discuss waste diversion requirements, resources and opportunities
  • Present to small groups about waste management expectations
     

During event set-up:

  • Assist with the set-up of Eco-stations, working with other City departments. An Eco-station is a temporary waste collection point, including a tent and containers for Garbage, Beverage Containers and, if applicable, Organics.
  • Oversee the delivery of dumpsters and, if applicable, Green Bins and ensure they are appropriately labelled to assist with sorting.
     

During the event:

  • Provide support to Event Organizers, Vendors and volunteers related to waste diversion.
  • Assist with waste sorting at Eco-stations and dumpster areas to improve diversion rates
  • Complete observations and audits of dumpsters and waste management processes  
  • Provide updates to the Waste Management Planning Coordinator on an ongoing basis
     

After the event:

  • Ensure City-ordered dumpsters are removed from the park

Community outreach and engagement:

  • Engagement and outreach activities to promote awareness and compliance with the Green Festivals
  • Set up information displays and participate at outreach events to answer to and engage with residents at Green Festivals and other community engagement events as needed
     

Research and data collection:

  • General data compilation and analysis of event diversion rates
  • On-going identification of waste trends and improvement solutions
  • Waste management technology/program research

 

General:

  • Report regularly to Waste Management Planning Coordinator(s) on work completed, including documenting work, outcomes and recommendations
  • Respond to resident enquiries and complaints by email, in person and by phone
  • Prepare and complete deliveries throughout London (program materials, Green Bin Carts, Kitchen Catchers, etc.)
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the waste and resource material collection and diversion programs
  • Other Waste Management duties, as assigned.

Qualifications:

Enrolled in or graduate student of Engineering, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Geography, Education, Media/Communications, Social Sciences, Humanities.

Must be a current student enrolled in full-time studies returning to school full-time September 2025 and/or require this placement to graduate from an academic program.

Specialized Training & Licenses:

  • Ontario G Class License IS REQUIRED  
  • Must be able to quickly learn and convey information to others
  • Must be friendly and approachable, able to professionally educate a diverse audience
  • Experience with public outreach, customer service and community engagement an asset
  • Experience and comfort presenting to large and small groups
  • Demonstrates initiative and strong organizational skills, effectively prioritizing and managing multiple responsibilities
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Compensation & Other Information:

$22.44/hour.

This posting is for one (1) temporary full-time up to 4 month student position (May - September 2025).

The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work outside the normal hours will occur throughout the four-month term including early mornings, late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Weekend work will be required; advance notice will be provided.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid. Minimum of 50% of the work is in office. Subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
