The Housing & Ancillary Services (HAS) portfolio is a self-funded Division generating over $100M in annual revenues and is comprised of more than 900 full-time and sessional employees. Our undergraduate residences and university-owned apartments are home to over 7,300 students from 66 different countries from around the world. We provide thriving residence communities which engage our diverse student population while supporting the academic mission of the University and ensuring profitability and cost effectiveness of the Housing operation. 

Responsibilities

Working from the theoretical frameworks and guiding principles of restorative justice and transformational learning, this role supports the behaviour management and discipline practices of Western’s residence communities.  Western’s Residences are fully operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout each academic year.  Reporting to the Director of Housing and providing leadership to the Residence Conduct Coordinators , the Associate Director of Residence Conduct and Safety leads the residence conduct and safety  system ensuring effective community management, conflict resolution methodology, safety and educational opportunities are emphasized. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree including studies in Behavioural Sciences, Social Sciences, Criminology, Education or other related discipline
  • Certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution training including mediation and restorative justice facilitation an asset

Experience:

  • 5 years’ progressive professional conduct/behaviour management  or judicial affairs experience within an academic setting 
  • Experience with restorative justice practice, mediation training and certification and other alternative dispute resolution experience
  • Experience supervising staff and projects

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Expertise in fact-finding and working with students to deduce how events unfolded based in the balance of probabilities and/or the preponderance of evidence
  • Well-developed conflict resolution skills with the ability to handle conflict constructively  
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to assess priorities effectively
  • Ability to work independently, delegate effectively and make sound decisions
  • Results-oriented with an ability to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of individual and team performance
  • Ability to efficiently build positive and collaborative working relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization and the public
  • Strong customer service skills to handle inquiries and resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
  • High level of integrity and trust, tact and diplomacy
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy and judgement including solid negotiation, crisis management and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficient in database management, Outlook and various social media platforms
  • Good listening skills and an ability to establish effective routines for excellent communication with all members of the team to maximize productivity
  • Accepting and respectful of different personalities and lifestyles
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with well-developed presentation skills 
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
  • Requirement to be on-call on a rotational basis throughout the academic year
