Position Summary:
The Senior Law Clerk provides administrative support to Legal Services, conducts legal and police research, and performs general legal duties.
Responsibilities Service on Description
- Review, maintain, and prioritize incoming material and correspondence including motion records and court orders.
- Provide reception services for Legal Services at the London Police Service (LPS) by telephone and in person.
- Prepare confidential correspondence on behalf of Legal Services directed to internal departments, private citizens, legal counsel, courts, tribunals and external organizations.
- Schedule, coordinate, attend, and take minutes of legal meetings.
- Photocopy, scan material, and arrange for courier pickup as required.
- Maintain and organize litigation files and tracking systems for Legal Services.
- Maintain a billing and tracking system for Court ordered reimbursements for productions.
- Coordinate the collection of officers' notes, occurrence reports, evidence and other internal materials in the possession of the Service in relation to production orders, ongoing litigation and discipline matters.
- Redact police records in accordance with the terms of Court Orders and/or applicable privacy legislation.
- Draft agreements and other legal materials based on available precedent for review by the Legal Director.
- Process third party production matters (Wagg motions) and prepare draft responses for review by the Legal Director.
- Develop and prepare routine letters, legal briefs, court documents and waivers for review and approval by the legal director.
- Other duties as assigned within the core competencies.
Requirements
- Law Clerk or Paralegal Diploma, or equivalent. 3-4 years’ experience as a law clerk or paralegal in a litigation environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills, judgement, and analysis required for problems or situations that deviate from straight-forward procedures on a regular basis.
- Excellent communication skills for regular contact throughout the organization and with members of the public, legal, and members of the judicial system, to give, obtain, and/or exchange, and/or discuss technical legal matters.
